Recent Interior Design Work: Meagan Cignoli's Visual Country Loft

For those of you who read the blog frequently, you'll probably recognize the name. Reference gorgeous fashion photography here, Fashion Photography, Meagan Cignoli.

Below is her loft, which Meagan uses as a combination live and work studio. I had the good fortune of advising her on the interior design.

Now, the existing condition is
1. Big open space.
2. Mminimal windows, and thus minimal light at one end.
3. It has to be extremely open for frequent events, gatherings, and photoshoots.

Given this criteria the idea was to
1. Challenge the scale of the space with a few big moments or elements.
2. Keep most everything white to allow for whatever slight natural light is coming in to keep moving throughout the space.
3. Define livable areas that feel comfortable, enclosed, and home like. All without literally dividing the space with walls. To define areas within areas I suppose.

There are notes below all of the photographs, and if you'd like to see more of my work you can simply visit my website at tmds1.com.

The exposed ceiling beams became a subconscious grid to regulate furniture arrangements into the larger space. We also defined areas like this one with large jute rugs below. This way the furniture can float in the space but also feel like it belongs to a designated area.

To challenge the scale of the loft, we used big or oversized canvases throughout. Their extreme presence and position in an abstract way also helps to complete the space within space definitions.

So you can clearly see the effect of using a lot of white. It really keeps the light bouncing around and dispersive within the windowless space.

Home Interior Design, New York Fashion Photographer Meagan Cignoli's Live And Work Visual Country Loft. A dining room is defined simply an oversized dining table with a big area rug beneath, and an oversized canvas at one end on axis. With this kind of treatment you can define a space without literally dividing it off or enclosing it.

Home Interior Design, New York Fashion Photographer Meagan Cignoli's Live And Work Visual Country Loft. Since the space is so big, just placing a bed in it would have seemed odd. It would feel small and lost. So I designed one into the column grid to integrate it with the existing architecture. We kept things industrial and loft like, so it's simply two wood box platforms with queen size mattresses on top. Remember, big space equals big moments. It may be the largest bed in Manhattan. Simply enclosed with some basic white sheers held from some old metal pipes. The sheers allow the bed to be closed off without being as opaque as a wall. I should also note that the box platforms are on wheels as some of the other furniture is. Just in case it needs to be moved out of the way for a big event or gathering.

I also designed a big desk that Meagan could work on which would also kind of be like a moment since there isn't that much furniture in the space. It's oversized and made out of standardized lumber dimensions. I used them to create something like a screen pattern so it wouldn't feel too bulky. And thus maintain the theme of extreme openness. A simple large piece of glass on top is a great clean working surface.

My(tmds1) Projects: www.tmds1.comRecent Project Photographs: "The Room With White Curtains..."

This is a beautiful suspended track and curtain system I designed for a CEO's office in New York. It wraps continuously all the way around the room. It's a simple concept with beautiful results. The curtains are held off of the walls by about 6". The track itself is almost entirely suspended from the ceiling at 9' high. This total enclosure of the room creates a dream like, floating, and weightless atmosphere. While also providing privacy from inter office windows and a soft barrier for sound absorbtion, which was a critical concern of the client. In general, wrapping a room completely in a curtain like this is a great idea I think for small spaces looking for a lift. Or a way to be interesting in a total sense. It feels modern, minimal, classic, and soft all at the same time. Use minimal furniture to compliment. Browns and neutrals work well together and with white. So there is some classic Herman Miller seating and a desk here. Nothing too heavy. A patch cowhide rug from ABC Carpet to finish it off. A great little project. Now, if you love it, you can contact Roie at Horizon Window Treatments, which is where the curtain system came from for this project. At 1 347 733 3454, or at roie@horizonyc.com.

My(tmds1) Projects: www.tmds1.comMarketing Firm, New York Office

This is a design I tried to keep as clean as possible. It's for a marketing and brand identity firm in New York. I think of it as a white space or as an ether. It's an idea that came from an understanding of the nature of a marketing and brand identity firm in general. It's a thinking space. A place for the generation of creative and visual ideas as they pertain to image. Thus, the use of white on white is a representation of this abstraction of thought, within which image and color are allowed to create themselves. Ideas are represented in color which injects itself periodically throughout the space. In a less abstract sense, the client also wanted to feel comfortable within the space. In a kind of chic or at home manner. With respect to this, the white can be understood as dream like, soothing, and relaxing. To emphasize this to a greater degree, natural textures are substituted to create warmth and feel throughout.

tmds1 New York: 3D-Rendering: www.tmds1.comIf you're designer isn't using 3D, they should be.

For architects and interior designers, plans and sections work just fine. But for your typical residential client, a means of visualization is needed. As I know from being contacted by a variety of residential designers, it's extremely difficult for a client to see a space within a series of diagrams. And that's why I almost always by default provide 3d rendering with a project. And as well why I'd suggest that if you're selecting an architect or an interior designer for your home, you ask if they provide 3d in house. Below are a few examples of how 3d can aid in visualizing a typical residential project.

My(tmds1) Projects: www.tmds1.comVisual Merchandising Design For Liz Claiborne And The Gap

This project is an excellent demonstration of how 3d rendering and design development can be used in a business context. The mission was to get Liz Claiborne's Monet jewelry brand into over 1,500 GAP locations. For such a large account, the design and presentation had to look already in place. With some research into GAP's existing store design guidelines, four variations for the merchandising were developed. Each attempting to blend the point blank, almost industrial nature of The GAP with the delicacy of Liz's jewelry. A mixture of coarse and refined textures. And through simultaneous design and photo realistic 3d rendering development, an account gained for Liz without building a thing.

My(tmds1) Projects: www.tmds1.comGlobal Retail Interiors Scheme For Olivet International

For the world's largest manufacturer of luggage, the language of the airport and the airplane were natural starting points for the design. Thus inspiration for brand graphics were taken from airport signage. The store section is set up lower on the sides. Thus allowing for HVAC and lighting to come from the top, just as above the seating in an airplane. A language of rounded corners in the details. White, blank, as the contemporary airport is, a nowhere zone. This allows for the merchandise to pop and distinguish itself, while inherently playing on the theme of travel. This first instance of the global design concept is under construction in Shanghai.

My(tmds1) Projects: www.tmds1.comLandscape Design(Out-Teriors), New York

This is a landscape project I developed in conjunction with The Sponzilli Group for the Trump residence. I also developed the 3d for the project, which came out quite nice I think.

Though clearly the estate is classical in nature, we tried to keep the design clean. And in that sense, contemporary. The geometrical nature of the layout is treated strictly and thus plantings are almost excessively ordered. A statue is used, but only once. In a powerful, singular, and thus abstract manner. Elements typically designated as interior in nature such as the canopy bed are brought outside to make the garden livable and chic. All in all, it's a project which I think demonstrates the ability of design to straddle classical and modern tendencies simultaneously.
