Movement And Contradiction

That which is most balanced, is also most precarious. Below there are three levels of movement and contradiction in the photographs. Which I think is why they are so incredibly provocative. And also so beautiful.

1. The literal movement or motion. Itself a contradiction. The opposition of forces.
2. The vibration of the images between seeming to capture a still moment and seeming to capture movement in time. This of course is a contradiction.
3. And lastly the visual suddenness or emotional immediacy of realizing that you're sensing two things at once. What the surrealists would refer to as the uncanny. Or the emotional feeling produced by seeing a double image.

Fashion Photography, Movement And Contradiction. Jan Masny. These first three all remind me of Rodin. But this one in particular has such a beautiful sense of motion and stillness emerging from each other. Amazing.

Fashion Photography, Movement And Contradiction. Iain Crawford. Static color becomes visual velocity. Yellow is so flat and muted, but can also be so fast. As in this image.

Fashion Photography, Movement And Contradiction. Petrovsky & Ramone. The diffusion of light softens an image, but the resulting blur renders uncertainty. A slow and unsure sense of movement.

Fashion Photography, Movement And Contradiction. Waldemar Hansson. This was the image that originally gave me the idea for the post. In a way, it's so still. The stong definitive sense of a geometrical composition. But then there is the immediacy of that tilt. Like she is frozen, but about the lean over. The handrail is solid and static, but also feels like it's moving along perspectival tracks. Like a train passing through the image.

Fashion Photography, Movement And Contradiction. Guy Bourdin. Even more subtle. Everything is natural save the tilt of the head. The angle is so dramatic that it almost seems uncanny, thus creating a sense of emotional immediacy and suddenness within the perception of the image.

Fashion Photography, Movement And Contradiction. The vibration created by seeing two distinct images at once. Both completely still.

Fashion Photography, Movement And Contradiction. Petrovsky & Ramone. Similar to the previous image in the sense that there is an overlay. The lights. Somehow that simple overlay of white dots immediately produces a sense of motion. Yet the image itself is almost entirely flat black.

Fashion Photography, Movement And Contradiction. And lastly, anticipation. Maybe trajectory is a better word. It's so quiet and still, yet the immediate sense is her prior or eventual movement.
