The 4th Of July And America: Fashion Ads By Tommy Hilfiger

With The 4th of July rapidly approaching I've decided, perhaps tragically, to get thematic about it. So concerning America what and who to post? Now admittedly while this idea started with Ralph Lauren it ended with Tommy Hilfiger.

Read into that what you will. Be it a cultural shift. All about the clothes. Or simply a brilliant series of advertising campaigns. None the less it works. There is something distinctly American about the below images. Be it the indigenous prep. The rampant use of red, white, and blue. Or more over and this is what I think is best about them, that everybody is unique within them. Though somehow brilliantly sporting the brand all at the same time.

I included images from the 2010 and 2009 campaigns as well. The 2010 campaign I particularly like as they are so suggestive of an era. And now if nothing else, you have about an hundred ideas for an outfit these next few days.

Modern Interior Design Product: 3D 'Wallpaper', Room Divider, Or Screen: 3-Form: Parametre

Today is a product I think is really interesting. The company is 3-Form. It's a company I really love and will probably blog more about in the future, as they have some amazing products. But for today I'm just going to stick with the Parametre product. Now, although in some of the below shots it looks solid, it's not. It's actually paper. Extremely strong paper. You could hang a twenty pound weight from it. I'm not joking. I think of it like 3d wallpaper but there are a million ways you could use it. The most typical application is as a room divider, or as a screen which I think looks great. I love how abstract it is. That it's perforated and in some ways lace like. Kind of sexy if done correctly. It also does beautiful things with the light given it's open structure and 3 dimensionality. Now, It comes in three shapes which are circle, hexagon, and rectilinear. And eight color flavors which are all great. Try it out!

Luxury Travel Destination: Lake Como, Italy

I wanted to get a destination in as I haven't done one yet. And as I'm sure there are many of you out there looking for somewhere new to travel these summer months. So today is all about Lake Como which is just north of Milan. It's one of my favorite places on Earth. You can fly to Milan and train or drive to Como. It's very quick and easy.

Broadly it's a series of small towns, all beautiful and all at the foot of the mountains just along the edge of the lake. For the Type A people out there, there is lots to schedule yourself with. Including swimming, shopping, hiking in the mountains, biking from town to town. As well there is often music at night in the squares. And for the Type B people it's an entirely ideal place for what else. Drinking coffee and wine all day, getting a tan, and wandering aimlessly. Yes please.

Now, it's obviously an excessively beautiful place which is bordering on magical. But that's not what I like most about it. The towns around the lake have an odd manner of feeling open and private at once. It doesn't feel like a tourist trap. And you can use it to unwind in a mental sense and get away from things. It's probably one of the few places I've been to where you can be reflective and have a rendezvous all at the same time. What more can I say.

Home Interior Design: Using Art Abstractly

I want to get into some other things. A destination and some fashion I think. But given that there was art on the blog for the first time yesterday, it only makes sense to look at some examples of art being used in interior design today. Ideas for your home or apartment. I chose these based on rather basic criteria being essentially large, medium, and small. And for this post I'm sticking with a canonical notion of art which is only inclusive of paintings or a framed picture. I'll have to do another post on art which is not art. So, by using art abstractly I mean that the images below aren't otherwise cluttered. In fact they are relatively abstract interior designs. Even minimal in some cases. But the art as an abstract element within those compositions always manages to hold the space together in a very powerful way. It's the first thing your eye sees. You see everything else in the room in reference to it.

Thomas-Michael

Using Art In Home Interior Design. This is obviously very big and powerful. It gives a tremendous amount of gravity to the space, which would otherwise seem floating, anonymous, and ordinary I think.

Using Art In Home Interior Design. This one is more subtle. It's offset to the right. It feels like an inhabitant of this empty space which would otherwise feel void.

Using Art In Home Interior Design. Medium now. But this one is so powerful. Maybe it's the scale of the paint strokes that makes it somehow feel bigger than it is. Or like it wants to visually expand out of the frame. It also kind of feels like it's watching or looking out over the room somehow.

Using Art In Home Interior Design. This example I really love. I like it so much because the canvas is essentially blank, yet it's highly present and active.

Using Art In Home Interior Design. And lastly this one I also love. As it demonstrates so perfectly how even a small and very abstract piece can make an entire space pivot around it. It's like a perspectival vanishing point within this bed frame. Your eye can't help but end up at it.

Contemporary Painting: Elizabeth Schuppe

We haven't talked about art at all yet. But it's only been two months. There's a lot left to get into.

'Rather than creating a recognizable object, I use the elements of painting itself to allow the story to unfold. There is no plan in my painting, yet there is process. I let a color, a line, a shadow dictate what comes next. My best works are the ones that just happen, when I allow myself to be surprised.'
-Elizabeth Schuppe

It's a beautiful description of the creative act. And one I think you can see suspended in the paintings below. I had bumped into these a few days ago, and couldn't stop looking and thinking about them over the weekend. I love the colors. They feel very contemporary, don't they. The latent presence of the act of making. The different ways the paint is applied which gives them a kind of implicit motion texture. How they each seem like a world onto themselves. And how they remind me of de Kooning, Pollock, and Rothko all at once. Even I see Miro in one.

Contemporary Painting, Elizabeth Schuppe, Hard Hearted, Acrylic On Canvas, 44"x46", 2009. I love the mixture of painting and drawing in this one. The drawing at times seems to act like a cage through which the painting is seen. It also has so much velocity and seems to be rotating around the center. Though is still an all over.

Contemporary Painting, Elizabeth Schuppe, Pearls On Five, Acrylic On Canvas, 65"x70", 2009. And lastly, this one is really beautiful. Makes me think abstract impressionist. Not sure that's an used term. But it's what comes to mind.

Evolution

The most beautiful things to me are the ones which are capable of changing definition within themselves.

This is the Evolution Dresser by Ferruccio Laviani for Emmemobili. And for the above reason alone it's one of my favorite things. You could probably write a thesis about this piece but I'll try to keep it simple. It's a timeline. Morphing from historical to now along itself. In the abstract it's an incredibly, incredibly provocative idea. One which I can imagine being applied to many different fields of design. Or one which will just simply have to be a post in itself one day.
