For architects and interior designers, plans and sections work just fine. But for your typical residential client, a means of visualization is needed. As I know from being contacted by a variety of residential designers, it's extremely difficult for a client to see a space within a series of diagrams. And that's why I almost always by default provide 3d rendering with a project. And as well why I'd suggest that if you're selecting an architect or an interior designer for your home, you ask if they provide 3d in house.
